I love American Apparel. The comfortable, simple but stylish pieces add so much versatility to my closet. Here, I am wearing one of my fav styles from AA, the criss-cross jersey dress in black, you can view other colors here http://store.americanapparel.net/rsa8344.html I pull them a lot for various photoshoots and music videos as they give the look a few different directions. I took some pictures of myself wearing the classic dress in a few different ways.1. Classic fur coat automatically adds luxury to anything simple. Its a quick way to add value and 5th avenue chic to your ensemble. When wearing fur make sure everything else is fitting and slim.2. The purple angora sweater from Malo and the shoes from Philosophy really makes the dress ladylike. Its a good second date outfit. I say second instead of first, as I don't like showing off too much skin on the first date. Second date is the reel in honey!3. A classic white jacket or blazer looks so sophisticated with black. I wanted to achieve an artsy but affluent look, the Jean Paul Gaultier blazer, YSL scarf and Moschino shoes gives this basic dress so much texture and life.Again, dahlings, this is a $44 dress from American Apparel that when styled with the right pieces can easily take you to chic status!!xo

Hope everyone is enjoying the Christmas holiday! I am in the midst of prepping for a BAZAAR editorial shoot. So lots of researching and market work going on over here! In the middle of it all I thought about this dress in my closet and decided I'm going to put it on and snatch some photos in between viewing collections and lookbooks.It is one of my favorite dresses because of the detail tailoring, color and rarity. Biagiotti is not one of those designers that are saturated in the market. Its nice to have a piece of that exclusive consumption. She was the first Italian designer to show a collection in China back in 88. Many years ago while living in LA, I helped out when of my friends organize her store in exchange for some clothes. She gave me a trash bag of things of which this dress was one. She told me some of the items had minor damage and couldn't sell, but for the most part were great. I never looked at the tag on the dress, until one day some friends 5 years ago asked me who made the dress I was wearing. I sold many of those pieces that she gave me through out the years living in LA for survival cash flow. But this dress needed to stay in my closet despite the tiny holes that were on it. Style Revamp!

Style REVAMP!Seriously, I was so over this micro leopard print jumpsuit. However, I really liked how the jersey cotton felt on my skin and well you all know how I love animal prints. But there is more... I can't deal with pleated pants and this jumpsuit has pleats. Although I have worn pleated pants/jumpsuits they have a very limited shelf life in my closet. So I went to work! I slit the seams open on the center and created a knot on what used to be a pant. It reminded me a bit of Donna Karen's jersey knotted ensembles. I also cut the sleeves off. It used to be long sleeve which felt very limited. So now the piece will last a little longer in my closet. I'm all about making the tired pieces hydrated for extended wear!talk soon,xodahlings

I love it when my closet naturally works itself out. I purchased these Camilla S. shoes last year at a really good Saks sale. I always ended up pairing the shoe with a gold clutch, while keeping my eye out for a more favorable bag. I found this bag while at the flea and immediately fell in love for the match that was ahead. I took my seam ripper out of my kit and went to work by taking off the faded leather straps and turned the bag into an oversize clutch.Leather experiences a lot of wear and tear, which makes vintage shopping for leather exasperating at times. However, calfskin and pony usually do well decade after decade.Hope everyone is having a great day!xodahlings

The last few days were grueling guys!! I had to design, shop and style 25 costumes for a commercial production in 5 days. As consumers are processing information and advertising on a faster speed so is the production to create the marketing median. An adequate amount of resources and quick thinking helps the process move along. The project was the most fun I had in a while and I love it when I can laugh non stop on a job and taken seriously. I always tell my team to not get caught up on being perfect, as being right all the time is highly overrated. What's important is the recovery process and the accountability to make amends.

Recently one of my guy friends asked me to take his adorable girlfriend shopping. She was an Island beauty with perfect skin and a great personality, but her fashion sense..........................

She wears bright colors often but the ensembles were too much of a parade, there was nothing to streamline the look and keep it chic. So we went shopping together and her warm bubbly personality mandated rich hues. I couldn't put her in the NYC gal formula of all black. I told her the key to wearing bright colors at the office is to wear something that will anchor the look. If you're going to wear a bright top, pair it with something clean neutral and chic on the bottom. This rule also applies vice versa.

There is nothing silly about beautiful bright bold colors!! The parade look begins when we wear it without stability.

At home in wool knits. From Celine to See by Chloe, knits in interesting patterns are another way to make a bold statement this season. I'm pictured wearing my sweater with charcoal denim. I like rolling up the hem to show the fragility of my ankles in heels. Its a subtle way to be sexy without looking nasty. I've been wearing jeans more so lately. After I lost 20 pounds this past summer I feel more comfortable wearing jeans.

Where's Brooklyn At?

Nothing more laid back and cool than a loft party in Brooklyn New York. I decided to turn up the notch with the casual attire and add a bit of sparkle. I made this skirt about 2 years ago and recently purchased this mesh top at the flea. The belt is YSL and the shoes are Aldo and I must say, I get a lot of mileage out of my Aldo pieces! Aldo is like the Honda of fashion. If you take care of it, it will last you a long time.

Brett, pictured here in those rugged boots took the pictures of me (thanks Brett!) He works for Ralph Lauren Corporate and its so obvious with that all American appeal he has.

Makeover!

Sherimane before the drastic makeover! A beautiful successful woman who needed a boost to her wardrobe. Above she is wearing a sensible look but it didn't speak volumes. I wanted to give her statement separates that wouldn't wear her out like pattern dresses tend to do.

Yellow top from Ann Taylor is smart and sexy and can be worn multiple ways! Perfect for frequent travelers and women who don't want to spend too much time thinking about their outfits.

Dressing sexy begins at home. Roaming around in dusty pieces diminishes tolerance for the work involved in looking chic. Wear long comfortable v neck sweaters and thick leggings for a change of pace. Top by Club Monaco, Tights by H&M! I love H&M tights by the way!

Several weeks ago I did a 5 Minute to Fab makeover on hellobeautiful.com with Sherimane a cook and IT executive. Sherimane is a very successful business woman and she wanted a look that conveyed that but didn't feel to serious. She wanted to look sexy (my specialty), approachable, smart but with a hint of bohemian as her bakery business on the side prides itself in all natural baked goods. So I knew a level of freedom and art was important to her.

When I'm styling someone who is on the go, travels frequently and needs a workable wardrobe it is important to me to give them key pieces that can work with multiple basics in their closets. If that step is missing people go back to dressing as they did before, because it takes too much time to figure out how to make the recently purchased wardrobe work.

I did a drastic makeover with Sherimane where I chopped off her hair with celeb hair stylist Q. I felt like the hair was heavy weight and didn't give her a light easy approachable appearance.

I got her this yellow silk blouse from Ann Taylor (which I must is making some great moves to appeal to women's sultry side) and worked it with a few pieces to show how far a great piece can go in a closet.

So elated for Sherimane!

Fashion Night Out was the most fun I had in months! I'm dancing in front of Tory Burch store. By far she had the best music in NYC, Everyone was singing and dancing the vibe was perfect for a shopping experience! I tossed my Givenchy bag on the floor and went in the direction of the beat.

Giving a kiss to my fabulous friend Atiba, stylist to the stars! This was the night to be out on the scene meeting people on the streets!

After all that dancing I needed to eat, Corey Parker also a celebrity stylist with a client list as long as this blog and I snapped a picture at Sea.

The Help needs HELP!!

Recently I purchased this vintage dress from my vintage dealer. I loved the yummy lemon color. It reminded me of a summer kitchen! I didn't try it on when I pulled it from her, I eyeballed it and new it would fit my frame. But when I came home and tried it on, I instantly felt like I was cooking in someone's kitchen! Hello!! Did someone just call "The Help" That's how I felt dahlings! I had to make amends immediately as my sexy was diminishing by the seconds.

I took my fancy scissors and cut right above the elastic waistband I turned the dress that came from someone's kitchen into a 2 piece! Of course to be worn separately.

I wanted a top that was relaxed and cropped. The new top fit the bill! The skirt was long and flowly but the structured jacket works to anchor the look.

Whenever shopping vintage always shop viewing the garment with its potential, not for what it is.

One of my favorite things about having a blog is sharing my moments with my fashion people that live to look fabulous even when a certain occasion doesn't meet our fab standards. Yesterday was one of those nights. I went to a Fashion party in Harlem dressed in one of my favorite dresses. I purchased it from a vintage dealer that was in NYC from Chicago.

The event was in West Harlem near the river with beautiful views. The occasion was to celebrate a fashion editor and his immense contributions to the fashion world. If I were him I would probably have left my own party leaving a nice note behind thanking everyone for all their efforts but that I had to leave. It wasn't fabulous... 30 long minutes were spent on a mic check... really?

I came home and fell on my red couch! This couch is what the red awnings at Barney's New York meant to tourists and shoppers along Madison ave before they turned them into a sleek black. Its an invitation to come in and relax. The intensity can be comforting.

After all a celebration should make people feel happy at home.

Re-Boot!

Re-stylizing my basics by adding a turban and a big bracelet. I've had all these pieces for well over a year and I wanted to give them a re-boot! I wore this Club Monaco scarf (pictured as turban) in the Rocawear ad I was featured in last year with Trey Songz. I wore it as a Turban to a party I attended early this year with a green Nicole Miller ensemble. Its a beautiful classic snake skin print and it makes me feel regal worn over my head. This Kenneth Cole dress will always be in my closet. The fit is impeccable and really shows the waist line. Ladies, this is one of the most visual parts that you want to showcase when you are going out on a date! The waist line gives the body shape!! Work it!!

Hachy gave me this dress about a year ago and its been sitting in my closet because it was that awkward length of being 3 inches below the knee. So today as I'm rushing to get dressed with only 30 minutes to go before I am late for my appointment, mind you it takes 15 minutes to get there, I decide that I want to wear the dress. I couldn't fight it, once I make up my mind on wearing something, I do the Tim Gunn and make it work!
I took my superior cutting sheers, cut about 5 inches and created a clean hem after running the garment through the sewing machine.
The shorter length gave me the platform for being flirtatious with my style!

The Statement Necklace and How It Rings the Bell

Wearing a statement necklace to a look can add so much vitality, but it can easily overwhelm a look if its done without a clear purpose. Sometimes too much accessories overshadow fabulous outfits when they are worn as ornaments and not as missing pieces to the puzzle. Above I wore 3 different looks with the same necklace to help you navigate through the "should I" and "How do I" process of wearing a statement necklace!

Ribbed cotton tanks are very casual garments. Its mostly worn for a workout, but in my look, I wanted a top to blend with the skirt and not over power it. I also wanted to feel light and casual especially in this NYC heat! However, the tank by itself and my wild hair looked too casual. Tying in the necklace was the missing piece for glam stamp.

Vintage anything will age you if its not paired with modern elements to give it more of a youthful edge. The necklace adds an edge to this look with the chain effect. Its like a boost to the look making the wool blouse with birds feel funky and less prairie. Its like adding ginger to orange juice!

Now this is what I consider an everyday look. Jeans and a cute, comfortable top. The statement necklace gave the cotton top an instant glam stamp! The Moschino shoes took me to the bar without having to go home and change.

Growing a Garden

Its tough... but I'm sticking out the hair change. I have been wearing my hair straight for nearly 2 years, maybe longer. Its been so long I can barely remember the last time I embraced my natural curl. I have truly been committed to the frequent blow outs. No CHEMICALS here... This is all from blow outs! What's interesting however is how over the years the overuse of heating products has completely changed the structure of the curl. Now my hair is this random texture. I am in the process of embracing it and in the process I am giving my style new avenues to venture!

Let's see how this unfolds!

I wanted a very tropical summer sexy look for this episode. Which also met a very natural sexy hair. A nice change keeps the moments refreshing and interesting. I have been wearing my hair straight for 3 years and wanted to switch it up. The shoes were a nice kick to the pattern combustion! I scored these Aldo heels for $89!!!!

Been working like a mule and the ever increasing bags underneath my eyes are a testament to the hard work and long days. But no complaining here, its truly a coveted privilege to get paid to do what you love. That's probably why I never get tired of it really. I just worked a 14 hour day and up late, sharing my special moment with you! Hachy and I walked to our fav taco truck and I asked her to take a photo with her Iphone. My pants were all the attention, they got loads of compliments and I think it was because the look so fun and carefree.

For the last three days, its been all about this zesty orange bag I picked up at the BCBG outlet store on Melrose Ave in Los Angeles. I have been in LA for a BAZAAR shoot as well as a TV project for a few days and I felt like my looks were incomplete. I have been feeling this way for most of Spring. I felt limited with my purse options but at the same time didn't want to spend $1500 on a bright colored bag. So when I found this soft quilted nylon bag for $40, I knew I just scored big time.

It has truly given me that boost that I needed for that perfect amount of sunshine!

Sexier!! I've been on my workout!

URGHHH SLOW DOWN!! Disaster!

Not all vertical lines are created equally. Recently I was strolling on Madison Avenue between 60th and 70th street (aka betta have a black card avenue!!) and I decided to make a quick left on 67th street. I walked in with a floral tubal dress that I made 11 years ago, a white Balenciaga bag and my bright yellow Marni shoes. I went straight for the sale department to see the shoes on sale but nothing called my name, well maybe a whisper, but it wasn't strong enough to get me to come closer. Instead I decided to peruse the Pre-Fall rack.

I tend to invest in good pants because I feel like its the one garment that experiences the most wear and tear. From the walking, running (to catch a train) sitting (in sometimes inappropriate places) and me personally my thighs and butt is where I first gain the weight when I'm cheating so those stitches get the pressure kick when I decide to misbehave.

I tried on these vertical knit pants, as the lines seem to promise longer legs and slimmer thighs. Although knit can be tricky, I've experienced some success before so decided to give it a try. I asked for the pants in my size. They didn't have my size................................ but suggested that I tried the biggest size they have................................. The biggest size they had was 2 sizes smaller than what I wear! I eyeballed the pants and truthfully they did look roomy so I went to the fitting room.

Notice how the center white bars all of a sudden got drunk and decided they were gonna go towards my inner thigh! That unexpected turn spoiled the promises of flattering fit! So after doing this blog post, I decided I won't be spending 800 dollars on these pants.

Somewhere in Soho

I came to SOHO after having a fitting with an executive client of mine to have a glass of Riesling with my pal Marie. I needed a release after a long work week. My client and I weren't on the same page, he wanted a different shoe for each look, where as I felt he should consider wearing the same shoe for 3 outfits. My suggestion wasn't about costs, this executive is fully loaded and capable of buying virtually anything! However, my job as a stylist is to show people how to get the most of their wardrobe. Great style is being able to transform a pair of shoe into something new by switching a pair of slacks to a great pair of denim, or changing your button down to a henley for a more casual look. Shoes can dress something up or down and that's why we buy good shoes!

My look is a total revamp of pieces in my closet. The top is a Zara dress that I'm wearing as a top, my H&M faux snake skin legging had its moments as a belt! My Walter Steiger shoe carried me through the last summer and will continue its ride through 2011! The classic ivory wedge will always be in vogue!

Remember dahlings, good style is not quantity, its quality!

Speaking of MTV Awards...

I pulled this Levi denim jacket for Lupe and wanted to make it unique to fit his sense of style. I called a friend of mine who is a really talented artist who has a niche for abstract expressionism and who is also a fan of Lupe Fiasco. I waited at a downtown cafe sipping an almond milk latte waiting for the artist to deliver the jacket to me. The artist, Matt Carter, is holding the piece and was gathering my opinion on the design. I took photos with my I Phone to see how it photographed and shared it with Hachy to get her opinion. The next morning I jetted to Universal Studio in LA where the MTV awards was being held and presented the piece to Lupe. Photographed with my I Phone is Lupe trying it on with a CK t shirt, Levi Jeans and Vans kicks.

I love fashion, but I avoid busting the budget. My dress is Norma Kamali from Wal Mart.

Marie and I went to Kenan Thompson of Saturday Night Live birthday celebration in Lower East Side Manhattan. I had to come chic for the funny man's special moment!

I raided the closet to give Marie's dress a boost! I added a Jean Paul Gaultier Jacket, A statement necklace, a snakeskin aqua green bag and matching shoes.

I rarely wear vintage shoes, but these pairs from Miss Maud are def one of my great finds! My black Walter Steiger bag is quickly becoming one of my favs! Its so chic and simple with clean lines and a small embossed logo at the bottom of the bag. I appreciate the subtle accent.

Close up shots! Did I ever share with you guys and gals how I got that scar in the middle of my forehead? I popped my zit back in 2004 and the mark never went away. I've read and heard the no no signs a million times but being impatient always got the best of me.

Marie scored like 10 touchdowns with this one transaction. The mink was instant "I gotta have!" The gold clutch went back down... Budget.

Home decor sets the tone for a visitor's experience. Simple zen to promote calmness and focus, nautical accessories for beach side relaxation, modern art deco for inspiration, the list goes on as interior designers are making blueprints for consumers to create their own.
Hachy recently sent me pictures from Sue Wong's fashion show in her Los Feliz home. Sue Wong's designs haven't been in my radar, but when I saw pictures of her home I pleasantly gasped at the endless nooks of inspirations that were all over her home!
From some of the furniture pieces she designed to the rug in Jimi Hendrix room... Yes there is a Jimi Hendrix room, evidently the rock star, Lena Horne and Jenny Depp all once call this livable museum home, its quite the interior for a fashion designer!

On Friday it was 70 degrees in NYC, 2 days later its down to 40 degrees. Sometimes that can be challenging for a wardrobe gearing for a Spring transition. Im set on not wearing anymore of my Winter Coats. As I type this, my building handy man is building my new wardrobe to house the coats I picked up last season; a rich egg shell Gianfranco Ferre coat, rabbit fur lined Cavalli anorak and one of my new favs a Max & Co coat that I wore with leopards (a la Dolce & Gabbana) as well as previous seasons' outerwear.

So today I decided to wear some of my heavier dresses. I'm wearing a vintage Lord & Taylor piece that cinched pleasantly on my waist! I paired it with my new fav crop jacket! I love this rich cognac piece as it adds an instant chic to my looks. The color reminds me of vintage Gucci shoes.

I always push the buttons with pattern mixing, it adds a certain unique dynamic that makes me feel like moving art.
